Introduction

ReedTV ("we," "us," or "our") operates the video hosting platform at reedtv.com. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your choices regarding your data.

By using ReedTV, you agree to the collection and use of information as described in this policy.

Information We Collect

We collect the following types of information to provide and improve our service:

  • Account information: Your name, email address, and password (hashed) when you create an account.
  • Video content: Videos you upload to the platform, including metadata such as title, description, duration, and file size.
  • Usage analytics: Aggregated view counts, viewer countries, and referrer URLs for your videos. Viewer IP addresses are hashed and not stored in identifiable form.
  • Payment information: Billing details are collected and processed by Stripe. We do not store your full credit card number on our servers.
  • Technical data: Information automatically collected when you use the service, such as browser type and general location (country level).
  • Patreon sign-in (viewers): If you use "Unlock with Patreon" to watch a creator's patrons-only video, we receive your Patreon user ID and your Patreon memberships (which creators you support, your membership status, tier, and pledge amount). We do not receive your Patreon email address, password, or payment details. See Unlock with Patreon below.
  • Patreon connection (creators): If you connect your Patreon account, we store your Patreon user ID and your campaign's ID, name, page URL, and tiers.
  • Creator pages: If you create a creator page, we store what you put on it: your handle, name, bio, links, colors, avatar and banner images, and your posts with their images and audio.
  • Comments, likes, and poll votes: If you comment on, like, or vote on a creator's post, we store what you wrote and the details described in Creator pages, comments, likes and votes below.

How We Use Your Data

We use the information we collect for the following purposes:

  • Provide the service: Host your videos, generate embed links, display analytics, and deliver the features you expect from the platform.
  • Process payments: Manage your subscription, calculate storage usage, and handle overage billing through Stripe.
  • Send transactional emails: Email verification, password resets, billing notifications, and important account updates. We do not send marketing emails.
  • Improve the platform: Understand how the service is used so we can fix issues and build better features.
  • Check Patreon memberships: If a creator makes a video patrons-only, we use your Patreon membership information only to decide whether you may watch it.
  • Enforce our terms: Prevent abuse and ensure the platform is used in accordance with our Terms of Service.

Data Storage and Security

Your data is stored and processed using the following infrastructure:

  • Cloudflare Workers and D1: Our application runs on Cloudflare Workers, and account data is stored in Cloudflare D1 (a serverless SQLite database). Data is distributed across Cloudflare's global network.
  • Video storage and delivery: Videos hosted on ReedTV are stored in Cloudflare R2 object storage and delivered to viewers over Cloudflare's global network.
  • Video processing: Uploaded videos are encoded into streaming formats, and captions are generated, on cloud GPU servers provided by RunPod.
  • Cloudflare Stream: Live streams, videos uploaded with the Standard upload method, and videos on a Cloudflare Stream account you connect through BYOA are processed by Cloudflare Stream.
  • Stripe: Payment processing and subscription management are handled entirely by Stripe. Your payment details are stored on Stripe's PCI-compliant infrastructure.
  • AWS SES: Transactional emails (verification, password resets, billing alerts) are sent through Amazon Simple Email Service (AWS SES).

We use encryption for sensitive data, including hashed passwords and encrypted API tokens. All connections to ReedTV use HTTPS.

Third-Party Services

We rely on the following third-party services to operate ReedTV. Each has its own privacy policy governing how they handle data:

We do not sell your personal information to third parties. We only share data with these services as necessary to operate the platform.

Bring Your Own Account (BYOA)

If you use the BYOA feature to connect your own Cloudflare Stream account, we store your Cloudflare account ID and an API token that you provide. The API token is encrypted at rest using AES-256 encryption and is only decrypted when making API calls to Cloudflare on your behalf.

Your BYOA videos remain on your own Cloudflare account. We do not copy or migrate them to our infrastructure. You can disconnect your Cloudflare account at any time, which removes the stored credentials from our system.

Unlock with Patreon

Creators can make videos available to their Patreon patrons only. To watch one, you sign in with Patreon and approve ReedTV's access to your Patreon identity and memberships. Your Patreon sign-in happens on patreon.com; we never see your Patreon password.

  • What we receive: Your Patreon user ID and name, and your memberships: which creators you support, your membership status, current tier, and pledge amount. We do not request your email address.
  • How we use it: Only to check whether your membership lets you watch a creator's patrons-only video. We re-check with Patreon about once an hour so access matches your current membership. We don't use it for marketing and don't sell or share it.
  • Security: The access tokens Patreon gives us are encrypted at rest with AES-256, like BYOA credentials.
  • Staying signed in: A first-party cookie on reedtv.com keeps you unlocked on that browser for up to 30 days. "Sign out" under an unlocked video ends it immediately.
  • Removing access: You can revoke ReedTV at any time in your Patreon account settings (Connected apps). Patreon sign-in data that hasn't been used for 90 days is deleted automatically, and you can ask us to delete it sooner.

Creators who connect a Patreon account let us read their campaign's name, page URL, tiers, and posts. Those access tokens are encrypted the same way, and disconnecting Patreon removes them.

Creator pages, comments, likes and votes

Creators can publish a public page on ReedTV (reedtv.com/@handle). Visitors can comment on posts signed in with Patreon or anonymously, and can like posts and vote in polls when signed in with Patreon. Commenters, likers, and voters don't need a ReedTV account.

  • What others see: Your comment, once the creator approves it, with a shortened name (the first few letters of your Patreon name followed by ***, for example "john***") or "Anonymous", and the same generic avatar everyone gets. We never show your full Patreon name or your Patreon profile picture. Likes and votes are shown only as totals.
  • What the creator sees: In their moderation queue, the creator also sees your comment while it waits, and whether you are currently one of their patrons.
  • What we store: The comment text and shortened name, your Patreon user ID (if you signed in) or a one-way hash of your anonymous comment cookie, and a one-way hash of your IP address so we can limit spam and abuse. We store only the shortened name, not your full Patreon name. Likes and votes are stored with your Patreon user ID so each person counts once.
  • Bot protection: Anonymous comments use Cloudflare Turnstile to check that a person, not a bot, is posting.
  • Reports: If you report a comment, we record that the report came from your Patreon ID, your anonymous comment cookie hash, or your IP address hash, so the same person can't report a comment twice.
  • Removing a comment: Ask the creator, or contact us and we'll remove it.

Cookies and Local Storage

ReedTV uses a minimal approach to browser storage:

  • Authentication tokens: We store a JSON Web Token (JWT) in your browser's localStorage to keep you logged in. This token is used solely for authentication and expires automatically.
  • Patreon unlock cookie: If you unlock a patrons-only video with Patreon, a first-party cookie keeps you signed in on that browser for up to 30 days, and a short-lived cookie protects the sign-in step itself. Neither is used for tracking.
  • Anonymous comment cookie: If you comment on a creator's page without signing in, a first-party cookie with a random value lets that browser show you your own comment while it waits for approval. It lasts up to one year and isn't used for tracking. We store only a one-way hash of it.
  • No tracking cookies: We do not use tracking cookies, advertising cookies, or any third-party analytics cookies.
  • No third-party trackers: We do not embed third-party tracking scripts such as Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or similar services.

Data Retention

We retain your data as follows:

  • Account data: Kept for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we remove your personal information from our systems.
  • Video content: Stored as long as your account is active and your subscription is in good standing. Videos on shared storage are removed if your account is deleted.
  • Analytics data: View statistics are retained as long as the associated video exists. Viewer IP hashes are not reversible to actual IP addresses.
  • Patreon sign-in data: Unlock sessions end after 30 days. Patreon sign-in data that hasn't been used for 90 days is deleted automatically.
  • Comments, likes, and votes: Kept until the creator or we delete them, or the post or page is deleted. Rejected comments stay visible only to the creator until deleted.
  • Creator page content: Kept until you delete it or close your account. Images and audio are deleted from storage when you remove them from a post or delete the post.
  • Payment records: Billing history is retained as required by law and Stripe's data retention policies.

Your Rights

You have the following rights regarding your personal data:

  • Access: You can request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Correction: You can update your account information at any time through your account settings, or contact us to correct any inaccurate data.
  • Deletion: You can request that we delete your account and associated personal data by contacting us at support@reedtv.com.
  • Data portability: You can export your video data at any time. BYOA users already have direct access to their videos on their own Cloudflare account.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at support@reedtv.com. We will respond to your request within 30 days.

Children's Privacy

ReedTV is not intended for use by anyone under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that we have collected data from a child under 13, we will take steps to delete that information promptly. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal data, please contact us at support@reedtv.com.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or for legal, operational, or regulatory reasons. When we make changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Changes are effective immediately upon posting.

We encourage you to review this page periodically. Continued use of ReedTV after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
