Cloudflare Stream Users: Why It's Time to Upgrade to the New ReedTV

Note: We've submitted our application to Embed.ly to become an official provider. Until Embed.ly approves and adds ReedTV, video embeds on platforms that use Embed.ly (Medium, Patreon, etc.) will not display as inline players yet. Once approved, new ReedTV links will embed seamlessly on all these platforms. We'll update this post when that happens.

ReedTV has been fully rebuilt from the ground up. The original app — a simple form that generated embed-friendly links for your Cloudflare Stream videos — served creators well for years, but the links it generates no longer embed properly on most platforms. That form is still available at /video for existing users who want to keep using it, video links you've already created will continue to work. But the new ReedTV is a complete video hosting platform with a dashboard, analytics, live streaming, and more.

If you're using the legacy form or hosting videos on Cloudflare Stream directly, here's why now is the time to sign up for the new ReedTV.

The Embed Problem

Cloudflare Stream videos no longer embed properly on platforms like Medium, Patreon, Substack, and WordPress. When you paste a Cloudflare Stream URL into a post, it renders as a plain link instead of an inline video player. This isn't a temporary glitch — it's a platform-level issue with how Cloudflare Stream handles oEmbed requests.

This affects links generated through the legacy ReedTV form as well. If your Patreon posts or Medium articles are showing broken video embeds instead of inline players, this is why.

This is a dealbreaker for creators who rely on embedded videos to deliver content to their audience. Your subscribers shouldn't have to click through to a separate page just to watch a video.

How the New ReedTV Will Fix This

The new ReedTV generates its own URLs (reedtv.com/watch?v=xxx) with full oEmbed support built in. The embed system is designed from scratch so that when you paste a ReedTV link into Patreon, Medium, WordPress, or any platform that supports oEmbed, it unfurls into a rich video preview with a thumbnail and inline player.

Platforms like Medium and Patreon use Embed.ly to resolve video links. We've submitted our application to Embed.ly to become a registered provider. Once approved, new ReedTV links will embed as inline players on all these platforms automatically. This is the final step, and we expect it to be completed soon.

Save Money by Consolidating

You can keep using the legacy form at /video at no extra cost — nothing changes there. But if you sign up for the new ReedTV, you can consolidate your billing and get a full-featured platform. Even if you were on the legacy free tier, the new BYOA plan costs the same as your existing Cloudflare Stream subscription. Here's how the math works:

Current Setup Monthly Cost New ReedTV Plan New Cost Savings
CF Stream ($5) + Legacy ($0 free tier) $5/mo BYOA $5/mo Same cost, more features
CF Stream ($5) + Legacy ($5 plan) $10/mo BYOA $5/mo Save 50%
CF Stream ($15) + Legacy ($5 plan) $20/mo Pro (BYOA + shared storage) $15/mo Save 25%

With the new ReedTV, everything is under one bill. No more juggling separate Cloudflare and ReedTV subscriptions.

What You Get with the New ReedTV

Easy Migration: Keep Your Existing Videos

If you already have a Cloudflare Stream account, migration takes minutes:

  1. Sign up for a new ReedTV account
  2. Connect your Cloudflare Stream account via the BYOA settings page
  3. Your videos sync automatically to your new dashboard
  4. Old embeds continue working — nothing breaks during the transition

Your videos stay on your Cloudflare account. You pay Cloudflare directly for storage as usual. ReedTV adds the management layer, analytics, and working embeds on top. The BYOA plan ($5/mo) is designed for users who only need their own CF Stream account. If you also want ReedTV-hosted shared storage, the Pro plan ($15/mo) gives you 3,000 minutes of shared storage plus BYOA. And if you don't have a CF Stream account, the Starter plan ($5/mo) gives you 1,000 minutes of shared storage with no setup required.
